Suncoast Basset Rescue Inc

Suncoast Basset Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) that rescues Basset Hounds from abusive, abandoned, and unwanted situations just for the love of the breed. Based in Auburndale, FL, and serving all areas of the state, our organization gives bassets a second chance to live as they were intended: as someone’s best friend.

Our rescue efforts began in 1997 with two volunteers and the help of the Suncoast Basset Hound Club of Tampa, Inc. Since then, Suncoast Basset Rescue has established its own nonprofit status. Over the course of 25 years, we have rescued over 5,100 bassets.

Our rescued bassets come from pounds, shelters, humane societies, and as owner surrenders. They bring with them a variety of stories: some are strays whose owners cannot be found, and others are relinquished by owners who no longer want them. Like all companion animals, bassets are given up for a variety of reasons. It may be due to changing lifestyles, the economy, allergies, or owner apathy. At times, they are only hours from death when we transfer them into our organization.

Although we are still a 100% volunteer-run organization with no administrative costs, we have grown over the years. We have worked to foster productive relationships with municipal shelters throughout Florida, which we assist by transferring basset hounds to our own organization. This helps to free up space for the municipal shelters to take in additional animals. We have also grown our robust foster network, which is essential for the lifesaving work we provide.
